Dear all

It may just happen to us. Someone of great importance may call or visit us, despite our apparent unworthiness.  In the 1980's, Dave, an English plumber and a great Bob Dylan fan, came home one night to his Crouch End, London, home to find Bob Dylan having a cup of tea with his wife. Bob had been looking for Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and had got the wrong address and the wrong Dave. Past US presidents have telephoned ordinary members of the American public out of the blue. But nothing quite compares with the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary, a virgin of no more than 14 years of age who lived in the Israelite backwater called Nazareth. He told her that she would be mother to Israel's Messiah and to complicate matters, the conception would be through the Holy Spirit. As we discussed at TLC after the service last Sunday - what would you have found most difficult? The idea of being specially favoured by God, the practicalities of a virgin conception or how to explain it to your in-laws! To encourage her, Gabriel tells her that her barren and elderly relative Elizabeth was six month's pregnant.

Mary's response is exemplary. She reflects on Gabriel's words and unlike her relative Zechariah who didn't believe Gabriel, she humbly accepts Gabriel's words though she wants to know more about the practicalities.

We can learn so much from Mary: her response is 'I am the Lord's servant, may your word to me be fulfilled'. There's a quiet heroism here. She's not yet married to Joseph and Joseph's reaction could be a strong one. She could become the object of ridicule. And yet her response was that of servant fully committed to doing her Master's will. And for us, and how we should conduct ourselves, the words of Micah 6:8 are very relevant. 'He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God'.

For a heads up, 'Christianity Explored,' a seven week evangelistic course, will be launched on January 18, 2019 at our January potluck. More information to come!

Blessings
