Bill Lee was our speaker on Sunday and we were so blessed by his reflections on Philippians - an epistle that he loves and has memorized - and even more by his life and example to us.

Bill introduced his sermon by reciting the Christ hymn of Philippians 2:6-11 and then asking us the question: what does it mean for us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling” knowing that it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure”? (2:12-13)

His answer: adopting the attitude of Christ Jesus!

First Bill encouraged us by drawing attention to the fact that there are truly saints among us who are living out the attitude of Christ in how they respond to trials, how they respond to disappointments, and how they value others.

One of the aspects of the attitude of Christ that Bill emphasized was trusting in God’s sovereignty. We so often get in trouble when we think we are the ones in charge. We must learn to trust the sovereignty of God in the trials and disappointment in our lives.

Bill shared many stories to show us how the attitude of Christ can protect us from bitterness, anger and schisms in our relationships:

  • The story of his friends Calvin and Kitty Chum who were resilient when they lost their life savings
  • The story of Jeremy Lin’s witness in the NBA despite injuries and setbacks
  • The story of Bill’s friend who responded with forgiveness to her husband’s affair
  • The story of Bill’s Friend who experienced peace and contentment even after becoming a quadriplegic due to a surgical error.

Bill concluded by challenging us to live our lives as Paul did – like a poured out drink offering, valuing others and their joy as the primary reason for and standard of success in life.

Grace and peace,

Thomas Bergen
