This past Sunday, Chris Kibble spoke on the Secret to Greatness from Matthew 20:20-28. The story was about Salome's request to have her sons James and John sit on Jesus' left and right and Jesus' teaching that "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." (20:26) Chris divided his sermon into three parts: What did the disciples get right? What did they get wrong? How shall we then live? First, the disciples James and John were part of Jesus' inner circle. They were enthusiastic followers of Jesus who had left everything to follow Jesus. They were eager to see Jesus' kingdom come.

Nevertheless, they missed the nature of Jesus' kingdom, his cross, and his teaching.

What does this mean for us? Firstly we must guard against being influenced by the patterns of power-acquisition and greatness-seeking in our culture: "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you." (20:25-26) Sadly, Church history shows that it has sometimes been just so with us.

Secondly, we must find our gift and find a way to use it to serve one another. If we don't serve we will become like the Dead Sea (all input, no output!) In this we have Jesus as our supreme example: "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

There are many different perceptions about what makes a person great. Let us challenge each other to become great in the way that Jesus taught us!

Make me a servant

Humble and meek

Lord let me lift up

Those who are weak

And may the prayer

Of my heart always be

Make me a servant

Make me a servant
