Proverbs – On Education, Prov 4:1-9 PDF Print E-mail

The beauty of Proverbs is that it speaks to ALL areas of our lives; money, friendship, work, wine, sex, pride, spiritual life, etc. Proverbs does not separate what is secular vs. spiritual but rather, it teaches us that all areas of our lives need wisdom from God.

“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” (Abraham Kuyper)

This past Sunday, Thomas helped us to see how our discipleship, learning, and education can be done with wisdom from Proverbs. Today, we face a crisis of character, ethics, and purpose. Here is how Proverbs offer us wisdom in the area of education.

1. (1:1-7) - Honor your parents as the primary educators.

2. (2:1-22) – The value of wisdom is incalculable.

3. (3:1-12) – Don’t exclude God from the classroom.

4. (3:21-35) – Develop your social relationships .

5. (4:1-9) – Lady Wisdom deserves you.

6. (4:10-19) – Know where you are going.

7. (4:20-27) – Guard your heart.

8. (5:1-23) – Honor marriage.

9. (6:20-35) – Run from sexual immorality

10. (7:1-27) – Instruct men to embrace Lady Wisdom

For each of the lessons from Proverbs, Thomas compared it to a modern day Proverb that is often taught in our schools, colleges, universities, and educational institutions. May we think critically about one of the most important areas of our lives.

Peace and grace, John
