This past week, we had the privilege of having Dr. Ross Hastings with us as he preached from Acts 1:1-11, where we see Jesus parting words during the last earthly moments with his disciples. As Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised the descending of the Spirit to empower the church to continue His work here on earth. Dr. Hastings highlighted four couplets that hold our faith and ministry together.

1. To do and to teach (1:1). Luke began by referring to his former book in which he told the story of what Jesus did and taught (v1). By implication, the church is to continue to do and to teach in accordance to Christ himself.  The teaching of Christ is authenticated by acts of justice, compassion, love, and service.

2. Suffering and resurrection (1:3). The cross and the resurrection of Jesus is at the heart of the Christian faith. As we go in mission, we will experience hardship and suffering however, we do so with the hope of resurrection. The apostle Paul said, “I want to know Christ, to know the power of his resurrection and the participation in his sufferings” (Phil 3:10).

3. Spirit and mission (1:4,8). The disciples were instructed to wait and not proceed until the Spirit came. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8). We need a fresh awareness of the Holy Spirit as we, the church, live missionally.

4. Ascended and will return (1:9-11). Jesus has ascended to be at the right hand of the Father and is interceding for us. Jesus will also return and we are to be faithful to the ends of the earth, until Christ returns.

Peace and Grace, John
