Members of the Compassion Ministry (Team 2018) comprises of George Nyr Jr. (Chair), Stan Choi, Bing Chan, James Jim, Mabel Chau, Fred Kwong, Sarah Cao, Pastor Chris Kibble.

Our Mandate

In accordance with the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Compassion Ministry exists to educate the LPC family about the poor and needy, to motivate them to act and to facilitate service both locally and globally.

Who are the Poor and Needy?

  1. 1) The extremely impoverished. It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That is roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year. About 24000 people die each year from hunger or hunger-related causes. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five. Famine and wars cause about 10% of hunger deaths although these tends to be the ones you hear about most often. The majority of hunger deaths are caused by chronic malnutrition. Families facing extreme poverty are simply unable to get enough food to eat.
  1. 2) The vulnerable: The alien, fatherless and the widow appear repeatedly in the Old Testament, and represent those who, in their need, lack a community or a system through which to find help.
  2. 3) Neighbour in Need: In his story of the good samaritan, Jesus identified the object of Compassion as people we encounter who need help from others.

  4. Biblical Basis
    1. - God cares for the poor (Deut 10:18; Ps 10:12-18, 12:5; 146:7-10)
    2. - God insists that his people give the poor and needy high priority (Prov 21:13; Isa 1:10-17; Ezek 16:49; Amos 5:21-24)-
    3. - The Lord Jesus establishes a pattern of ministry to the poor (Luke 4:18-19; 12:33; 14:12-14; Acts 20:35)
    4. - The followers of Christ continued his pattern of ministry (Acts 4:34; Gal 2:10; Jas 2:14-17; 1 John 3:16-18)
    5. - God will judge people by how they have responded to the poor (Exod 22:21-27; Isa 3:13-15; Amos 5:11-17; Matt 25:31-46)

    1. The budget target, not including designated giving by members of the congregation, shall be approximately 5% of the total giving received by the Church.
    2. The team shall assign the budget to be used as follows:
      a. global needs: 70-80%
      b. Local needs: 20%
      c. LPC needs 0-10%
