Dear all

You're Paul the Apostle, you're in jail and you're worried about the spiritual health of your friends in Philippi. Whom can you send to bring back reliable news about Philippi, and while he's there, to care of their spiritual welfare? And who can you rely on to take a letter from you to Philippi?  Well, Paul had two reliable men to hand, Timothy and Epaphroditus. Timothy had been a faithful supporter of Paul for over 10 years and he would bring back the news from Philippi. And Epaphroditus, who had been sent by the Philippians to help Paul through his difficult time in jail, would carry Paul's letter to them.

Bill Lee was our speaker on Sunday and we were so blessed by his reflections on Philippians - an epistle that he loves and has memorized - and even more by his life and example to us.

Bill introduced his sermon by reciting the Christ hymn of Philippians 2:6-11 and then asking us the question: what does it mean for us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling” knowing that it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure”? (2:12-13)

Dear all

Our Sunday passage of scripture, Philippians 2:5-11, is one of the best known descriptions of the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul starts by emphasizing that this Jesus was, is and will be the Lord of all the earth. Other places in scripture attest to this too: whilst on earth, Jesus exercised his power over the wind and waves, over sickness and in the raising of Lazarus, over death itself. But it wasn't until the resurrection that Jesus finally confirmed to his followers who he was. Even Jesus' skeptical disciple Thomas eventually came to declare to Jesus 'My Lord and my God' in John 20:28.
