Looking for Faith in all the wrong places - “GWYTK @ Facebook”

Written by: Conrade Yap

[The problem with God-Wants-You-To-Know Facebook Application]

Some of my Facebook friends are joining the next hip faith-based application called: “God Wants You to Know” (GWYTK). On a daily basis, inspirational devotionals will be sent to friends who sign up for free at the popular social networking Facebook platform. The application promises to “bring you back to love, to strength, to happiness. And in times of great need, ask for a prayer, and be supported by the caring prayers of friends around the world you never knew you had. ” With more than 6000 friends, and astonishing 1.8 million 'active users' per month, the application has certainly scratched where many people is itching. As I ponder on this new popular platform, GWYTK, I want to express some of my reservations.

The Irish poet, Oscar Wilde describes the human saint and sinner as follows: “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.” In one sentence, he reminds us of two important aspects of being human: Humility and Hope. By grace, we can experience both.

The reputable third century saint, Augustine of Hippo, well-known for his Confessions, is a womanizer who fathered an illegitimate child! Yet, he goes on to become a Patron Saint of Western Christendom in the early centuries. Without proper recognition of his past sins, Augustine would not have lacked integrity in his leadership.

Five Cautions about Money

"Real success in life means the individual's conquest of himself; it means how he has betttered himself, not how he has bettered his fortune. The great questions in life is not "What have I?" but "What am I?"" (William George Jordan)

Do not let your possessions define who you are. If you do, you will soon learn that your value depreciates rapidly, especially when your possessions become less and less. Instead, let your knowledge of who you are, be defined by God, that you learn to take control of possessions, lest these possessions control you. Until you learn how to manage possessions, be thankful that you do not have too much of them. Below are five warnings about the nature of money.
